Friday Feature: Top 10 Sci-Fi Part One

Good Afternoon Cats and Kittens! It's a rainy day here in West Texas thanks to the hurricane. I've been enjoying the gray clouds and the drizzle; I have also been enjoying running in the rain. For some reason when it rains, all I want to do is curl up on the couch and read a book or watch a movie with a steamy cup of Lady Grey Tea. Well, after going to all three food specialty store in town, not a single one carries Lady Grey tea all by its self, in a variety pack, yes, but not alone. So Sad.
Lately I have been on a Sci-Fi Film kick, so I thought I would share a few of my favorites, but I realized while making this list that cutting it down to 10 might be impossible. So this is Part One...

1. Star Wars (the original 3)
No Sci-Fi list would be complete without Star Wars. My mother saw the first movie 37 times in the theater and I remember my cousin and I playing Star Wars in the back yard and I would argue that I didn't have to be Princess Leia just because I was a girl. These are also my go to movies when I have no idea what I want to watch. Absolute classics.

2. Blade Runner

Besides Harrison Ford looking amazing and the awesome 40's throw back fashion, the story is amazing. If you haven't seen it, it's a great movie and definitely worth a rent.

3. Aliens
Oh my gosh, this movie scared the sin out of me when I was younger. I was too afraid to walk down the dark hall that was all of 8 feet long to my bedroom without and escort. I had a giant flower made out of tissue paper in the corner of my room that cast a shadow on the wall that looked just like an alien. Remake be warned this is a classic and many of us feel it should not be tampered with. Make as many sequels as you want, but Sigourney Weaver is Ripley!

4. V for Vendetta
A wonderful masked hero who saves us from our government created dystopia by kidnapping the beautiful Natalie Portman and making her his disciple. I HEART this movie mucho! Plus, she still looks stunning bald!

5. Galaxy Quest
Humor in space...I know what you're thinking, really...this movie looks ridiculous. Well, it is in a wonderful way. Poking fun at Trekkies and has been actors forced to save an entire race of alien people who have modeled their nation after an American television show. It's amazing, and there are some wonderful stars just hiding in the background...Justin Long as an uber- space geek. Come on give it a shot...it's even got Professor Snape.

6. Donnie Darko

I don't know if Donnie Darko is considered Sci-Fi but it does include time travel. Plus, that bunny still gives me the creepies. This is a movie if you haven't seen it, you missed the huge cult following and you should hop on the "this movie is super awesome" band wagon. Also, I had to watch more than once to catch all the snippets that make this movie a cacophony of connections.

7. Equilibrium
Equilibrium came out during the Matrix madness and sadly was completely overlooked. Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Sean Bean, and Emily Watson round out the amazing cast. In the future, people take a drug to stop feeling, because human emotions cause wars. People who stop taking their meds are called "feelers", and they are illegal. Also illegal, paintings, music, books...sounds familiar for those who have read Fahrenheit 451. Plus, the action is insane...it's like karate with guns. It's a great dystopian movie with splatterings of revolution!

8. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Based on the book I haven't read, but is on my shelf waiting to be read, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy follows a British man who comes to discover that his best friend is an alien and his planet has been destroyed to make way for an intergalactic super bypass. The cast is again amazing: Martin Freeman (the Brit), Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Sam Rockwell, Alan Rickman, John Malcovich, and Helen Mirren, who gives us the answer to life...the answer is 42.

9. E.T.
My second Christmas was what has now been deemed the ET Christmas. It every photo I am surrounded by ET paraphernalia. I don't really remember that Christmas, but I do remember watching the movie over and over again. I also only wanted to wear a red zip up hoodie and I had to have a boys bike, which wasn't a problem, I rode my cousin's hand-me-down. Such a great flick, I may watch it this weekend.

10. Serenity
All you Joss Whedon fans already know how awesome this movie is, and for those of you who don't, it's available instantly on Netflix. Based on the short lived TV series Firefly (also available instantly on Netflix), Serenity follows a group of rogue crew hiding a government telepathic fugitive. Good times all around! Series or Movie both are super great!

Happy Friday, Enjoy your weekend...See a movie!

Great list!!!

Love love love Hitchhiker's Guide! and lol to Galaxy Quest, that's a fun watch. :)

Plus, Hugo Weaving is in a lot of sci-fi and fantasy flicks, but I also love him as V the most.
