Today, a district level administrator sat in on one of my classes to evaluate my teaching. I was a little nervous. The kids come in, they stay on task, and they show the infinite amount of knowledge they have gained in class. Wink! Anyway...we did great! In fact, We Exceed Expectations!

The day started a bit hectic...
Of course, I was running a bit late to school, and when I arrived...No Coffee! We were out of filters. I was devastated and nervous. I become quite unpleasant without my daily intake of caffeine.The day looked grim.

But in the middle of 1st period, I received an email stating that someone stole a coffee filter from another building and there was a fresh-brewed pot.

Joy! I was so happy! Thanks to my wonderful co-teacher, I rushed to the lounge and filled my cup to the brim. All was well in the world.

So today, I am celebrating what's right in the world...Coffee!

So I guess you have noticed that I have been MIA for quite some time. I started my new teaching job and I love it! This may have been the smartest professional decision I have ever made. While I am still trying to finish my Masters (countdown to Oct. 20th!), I am so busy with school and life; sadly, blogging was forced to the backburner while the craziness consumed my days.

But enough about stress let's celebrate....

During a staff development session for school, I saw a video called Celebrating What's Right with the World. Not only was it created by a National Geographic Photographer, but it's message was applicable to anyone: instead of focusing on the negative things you cannot change, celebrate what's right. It doesn't need to be a big thing, just an element in your life which brings you a bit of joy. Easy, right?

So I have decided to make October Celebrating What's right in the World! I think you should join me...
So today, I have to finish my portfolio for my Masters presentation, and I am on academic overload, but I choose to celebrate the fact that the weather is gorgeous; I am enjoying a yummy pumpkin spice latte, and that after today, my portfolio will be completed!

As excited as I am about my new teaching job, I am a little sad to be leaving my current position. The main reason being, the lunch crew. The production staff here at the station goes out to lunch at least 3 times a week, and we always go at least once a week to El Paisanos...yummy Mexican food. It took a while to get approval from this great group of guys, but I was accepted by the lunch committee. Because I will be unable to go out to lunch with them during the school year and with my departure just around the corner, the lunch committee has released an ad to fill my position and posted it up at work.

I am currently taking a class called Teaching the Graphic Novel. It's amazing, and a lot of work, but totally worth it. I have just completed a book called One Hundred Demons by Lynda Barry.

Barry reflects on her childhood and reveals moments that help create the person she is today. Each chapter in this beautiful book is a demon which is actually a word and the history attached to that word. In a chapter called "Magic Lanterns," Barry discusses the magic power contained in childhood objects like a blankets or stuffed animals and the devastation of losing said object.

Barry's writing is like a friend, someone you have never met who can speak to the truth of who you are. She is caring and endearing, and encourages others to pick up a pen and exorcise their demons. Spend some time in this book and you will leave with a new friend.

Barry didn't have books at home so she began reading the Classifieds of the newspaper and making up her own stories. I love seeing her 9-year-old imagination at work.

I have also ordered her book What It Is. This book helps to unleash the writer inside and I hope to use some of the exercises in my classroom.

I have been offered a job at one of our local high schools teaching 11th grade English! I am so excited. I feel so lucky to have been hired at the school I student taught at, and across the hall from my cooperating teacher. I start in a couple of weeks and I am finishing up my last classes of grad school. I'm hoping I'll get to take a short breather before the chaos ensues.

Back Home Again

So after a whirlwind week/weekend, I am back on my couch reading and doing homework. Playing catch up.

Happy things about last week:
1. Made new friends.
2. Saw the midnight Harry Potter double feature with my mother-in.
3. Wandered Dallas with my sister-in-law and her husband.
4. Had a grand ol' time at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth for Lindsay's bachlorette party.
5. Made it home in one piece.

Bummer about last week/weekend
1. Missing the San Angelo Souls Sisters' bout in San Antonio. Insert sad face with tear here. I know there will be more, and I'll have another chance to throw a couple of hip checks.

I'm currently sitting in my hotel room in Dallas, Texas enjoying my 45 minutes break from the Nexstar Braodcasting eMedia Summit. The conference has been jam packed full of information, but the phrase they keep repeating is "facebook optimized."

I don't know if you guys heard...but facebook is kinda big.

Weekend Recap: Derby Edition

Our derby team has been slowly taking portraits of all the players for our website, posters, etc. And this weekend was my turn. I was a little nervous. First, because I am usually behind the camera, and second, when I take pictures of myself, I automatically delete the bad ones. So, to have someone else shooting pictures required me to release a little control.

Honestly, it was tons of fun. My group consisted of Hooten Annie, Richard Vixon, and myself, The Scarlet Shredder. There was lots of laughing and roller skating across streets downtown. I lost a toe stop which Annie quickly mended in the middle of the street. And, just a couple of whistles from passing cars. Here is a sneak peek from Laura Hardy (aka Spank N Bury) and Crystal Ruiz.

Martha (aka Luv Lee Rage) made this removable collar for me a couple weeks ago. I whipped my shirt together using some Heat 'N Bond thermal webbing and red fabric. I was a little proud of myself. My little shorts say "BOOK" on the back. Hooten Annie showed me this video, which is awesome. So, my shorts are a little inside joke to those who have seen it.

1. My plans this summer include finishing school and seeing Harry Potter.

2. The best summer I ever had was when I was younger. We spent a couple weeks every some in Sheboygan, Wisconsin visiting my great aunt. She lived on Lake Michigan right on the beach. Days in the water, hiking through the woods, and swinging in the hammock. Nights by the fire drinking hot coca. Perfect!

3. Summer is time for sunscreen, swimming, camping, and vacationing.

4. My favorite summer food is watermelon, corn on the cob, and brats.

5. The best way to quench a summer thirst is with watermelon aqua fresca from a Pingius Paleteria.

6. My summer uniform consists of dresses and skirts...not a fan of shorts, flip flops, wavy hair, and big sunglasses.

7. The best thing about summer is barbequing with friends, drinking cold beer, and relaxing.

Yeah, I'm taking a class about comic books.

So last summer session, I was a bit of a whiner. Not that it wasn't justified, but my class were not as intriguing as some of my previous classes. Well this semester I am not only taking Problems in Instructional Supervision, but Teaching the Graphic Novel. Woot!
I know, I know, how lucky am I? But for the first 2 days of class, this stuff is seriously intense. I may be reading graphic novels, but there is no slacking going on here. I have 6 books, one of which is nothing but words (LOL). But in all seriousness, I have learned some pretty amazing things already.

Our brains are totally amazing!

3 things I learned over a 3 day weekend

I hope everyone enjoyed their Independence Day weekend. For those of you who were not under a burn ban, I hope you grilled and BBQ-ed till your hearts content. Because West Texas is so dry and flammable, our burn ban kept us from grilling and shooting fireworks. The city was still able to shoot fireworks, so don't feel too bad for us.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a 3 day weekend. It was much needed after my first summer session for school draining me of all my love for learning. I wrote a 6-20 page paper every other day, so a weekend without having to look up style rules in my APA Manual was a lovely break.

During my 3 day vacation, I learned a couple of things...

1. Faster Pussycat still Rocks!!!

One of my Sassters (roller derby team mates/sister) celebrated her birthday this weekend. So a bunch of girls got gussied up and headed to the Deadhorse. The Deadhorse is a bar in San Angelo owned by another Sasster whose band The Shotgun Rebels opened for Faster Pussycat. I remember listening to tapes of Faster Pussycat in someone's car, maybe my dad or uncle, not too sure, but incase you were wondering, they are still awesome. Sure, there is only one original member, but who cares if they put on a great show. And a big thanks goes to Lanie for bringing a band that famous to little San Angelo!

2. I'm left eye dominant, but shoot right-handed.

While enjoying the great American/Texan pastime of shooting guns, I learned I'm left-eye dominant. I had always shot pistols at the firing range with Patrick's parents, but this weekend I shot a rifle and had a bit of difficulty. Then Patrick asked, " Do you shoot pictures with your left eye." As it turns out, I do. Added to this little quirk, I am also left-foot dominant. Maybe I am an accidental right handed person, maybe I was supposed to be a lefty.

3. Drunk surveyors moved our nation's border

How the States Got Their Shapes on the History Channel is super educational. I learned states gave up territory just to get rid of unruly inhabitants. We had a state called Franklin for 4 years where Tennessee is now. And my favorite, A couple of drunk surveyors incorrectly plotted the border between Canada and Vermont and we went a built a fort in Canada...teehee. While the US/Canada border follows the 45th parallel North for the majority of the country, these fellas spent a little too much money on the ale and plotted the border a kilometer into Canada. This show is funny and educational...it's on Tuesdays if you get a chance to watch it.

Derby Bout Recap

This past Saturday, the San Angelo Soul Sisters played the Abilene Derby Dames. This was my first bout since joining the team 6 months ago. It was a rough day for me. As a jammer, I got beat up pretty good. I got hit, went down, and knock my head against the cement. I got a bit of a shock and the EMTs had to check me out. No concussion, just a little rattled (Mama, I'm fine). Both my body and ego a bit bruised. Not the greatest derby debut, but hopefully the next bout will be better.

I had tons of family there, so I felt kinda bad about getting my a$$ kicked in front of Patrick's grandmother, but its what I signed up for. It's kinda funny really. As I am skating and I'm taking these hits and falling, I can hear the crowd go "Ohhhh!", so it must have looked pretty bad. Luckily for me, the adrenaline running through my body kept me from noticing the immediate pain, but I do have some fun bruises.

I need to get organized!

The past year of my life has been non-stop. Working full-time, going to school full-time, and life commitments have made my life seem hectic at a constant fast pace. But As I finish up this semester and embark on the last semester of my graduate courses (Eeek!), I feel the need to get my life back in order.

So thanks to the folks at Simple.Organized.Life. , I have 10 tips to de-clutter and get organized!

1. Have a place for everything.
I am about 40% good on this one. I have places for somethings, but the things that need a home usually accumulate and create a mess.

2. When you bring home one thing-send one thing out the door.
I am at about 20% on this one. I have been much better lately, but sometimes it's hard for me to get rid of things...I have the mentality that I will give things as gifts, or re-purpose them, but in reality they tend to just take up space.

3. Boxes, Boxes, Boxes
Even if you have a lot of stuff, boxes make it seem more manageable. They recommend free boxes, and discourage plastic bins when free storage is available. I already broke this rule and bought 2 tupperware bins last week.

4. Craigslist, Ebay, and Amazon are your friends!
Amen! I just sold back 6 textbooks to Amazon for a nice chunks of change. I would also you are your firends getting together for a garage sale. And in the blogger wold, Shop My Closet is becoming more popular and a little less of a hassle.

5. Purge twice a year.
Take a weekend and just get it done.

6. Put stuff away in storage until you need it.
Not paying for storage, but placing Xmas decorations in the garage until next year. They don't need to be taking up closet space. One of my goals this summer is to clean out my storage unit and stop paying for storage.

7. Start small.
If you are overwhelmed like I am, start small. Purge just 10 minutes everyday or fill up one trash bag everyday.Starting small can make the process more manageable.

8. Unsubscribe to magazines and catalogs.
Catalogs are available paper free on the internet and magazines are free from your local library. Most people only read magazine once or twice then they just sit around. If you rent them from the library, you have them for 2 weeks and give them back...no clutter!

9. But multi-function versions of products.
A coffee maker that both grinds the beans and makes the coffee or universal remotes. This reduces the amount of stuff you have to find a home for.

10. Make lists.
If you write tasks down when you think of them, you are more likely to accomplish your goals. They recommend carrying a notebook to jot down lists. I would also like to add phone reminders. I set alarms on my phone to remind me to take my bags to Goodwill.

So there it is, 10 tips to get de-cluttered. It's my goal, with my life slowing down in then next month or so, I am hoping to get more organized and in turn have a little more time to be crafty. I can't craft in clutter.

Fill in the Blank Friday

Reading my friend Shawna's blog, One More, With Feeling, I realized I haven't done a Fill in the Blank Friday in a while. But, it's never too late to start again.

1. The last thing I ate was a Grilled Chicken Wrap from Buffalo Wild Wings, after derby practice late last night.

2. The next thing I'd like to eat is Tacos Mexicanos.

3. The best things in life are free!

4. Something that makes me supremely and utterly happy is finishing a good book, giving a good hit in derby, and laughing with my husband.

5. Sports are fun to play, but better to watch if there are nachos involved.

6. I miss my family; they are just too far away.

7. Right now I am procrastinating writing a paper, drinking gas station coffee, and nervous about my first derby bout tomorrow.

And just a kitten in a bow-tie for kicks!

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you never have a moment to just sit and breathe? That's this week. Besides having three papers due this week, my focus is on derby practice because my very first bout is on Saturday in Abilene. I'm nervous. Eek! We are up against the Abilene Sugar Bombs.

I love derby.

I love my team mates.

I love the sense of accomplishment I get after a good practice.

I like wearing fishnets and athletic gear. It's funny.

If anyone has sage advice about beating nerves, give me a shout.

Boba Tea in San Angelo?

Yes, indeed! A drive-up donuts/kolaches bakery run by a young husband and wife from Cambodia made my day! I screamed with delight when I saw their saw...Now Serving Boba & Thai Tea! And since my first attempt yesterday failed because they close at 1pm, today, I left work early at lunch to get my ice cold treat! It was much needed...it's 106 degrees today!

Have you ever had a weekend that just sucked? This weekend sucked. Luckily, my dear husband was out of town and was not here to witness my complete freak out/breakdown. It goes a little like this...

Friday:
8 hours of works- everyone left early but me.
Short break to pick up things at Target.
4 hours of homework- mostly journal article reading

Saturday:
4 hour roller derby practice- This was the highlight of my weekend. We focused on hitting and my ribs are bruised and I love it!
Quick lunch
3 hour library session- more research
4 hours to write an annotated bibliography for my research project.
2 hours of Ghost Hunters
Sleep

Sunday:
Coffee
2 hours of textbook reading
2 hours of freaking out- I realized that I have been reading the wrong text book for 2 weeks. So, I desperately tried to find someone in town who had my book because the library does not carry it nor was the bookstore open on Sunday.
7 hours of trying to piece together chapter reviews by midnight- Portions of the text are available online, so I was able to throw together something. I submitted my paper 11 minutes before the midnight deadline.
3 hours of tossing and turning
3 hours of restless sleep

That about brings us to the present. I learned that instead of using book titles as a search on Amazon.com, I should be using the ISBN #. Also, I should not wait until the day of an assignment is due to start my work, but I am a procrastinator and it's in my nature.

I know its just one assignment, but these summer classes are abbreviated and everything counts. I don't have various assignments to make up my mistakes on this one. Why didn't you just email your professor? Yeah, I would be taking the hardest class from the hardest professor; She does not accept late work-ever. And because this mistake was a result of my ignorance in ordering textbooks, I'm pretty sure she would just dismiss my plea. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my career as a graduate student and for some reason graduating with a 4.0 will validate my smartness. I know I'm geeky.

I hope everyone had a better weekend than I did, it wouldn't take much.

Paranormal

One of the guys up at work had to create a magazine for one of his classes. He is one of those guys who always goes above and beyond the standard. His faux magazine, Apocalypse Monthly, included an ad for a faux TV show on the Sci-Fi Network. He just told me that for one of his summer classes, he needs to create a tv promotion for a show...and he wants to do this show!

Isn't it great?! I kinda feel like a bad-ass with an posee of dudes. We are going to have so much fun making a commercial for this show. When it's done, I'll post it.

I do have a small confession concerning Paranormal shows...

I love love love Ghost Adventures!

They are so serious and it's just so funny! Plus, I love that Aaron (the dude in the back) is kind of a wuss and they always make him do the extra scary stuff. And it's totally fun to count how many times they say "Dude" and "Bro." It's a harmonious marriage of supernatural research and unintentional humor.

Alright, confess! There are at least 20 supernatural shows floating around on cable, which one do you watch? Do you hate? Find entirely too funny to ever take them seriously?

   Summer brings the heat and this inexplicable urge to go camping. When I was young, my family camped every summer. If we were going to visit someone, we would camp along the way. I thought everyone traveled this way, but as in turns out...we were kinda poor and it's the cheapest way to travel.
   As a child, I loved being outside, to hear the birds, feel the breeze, and lay with my eyes closed in the grass. I'm sure my parents didn't find camping across the country with 2 small children as whimsical as I did, but when I look back at pictures of our camping trips I can see all the fun they had.
   One trip took us through the Great Smokey Mountains. I was six and extremely friendly to a couple of baby black bears. My mother knowing a mama black bear would soon be following swept me up in a frenzy and locked us in the van. Soon a park ranger came through to warn us about the possibility of black bears roaming the campsite; he was a little late.
   Later in life, I became a camp counselor. Canoeing, hiking, and discovering everyday. From morning till night being outside and enjoying nature all day. As an adult, there isn't as much room for roaming the wild as I would like.
   Patrick and I went camping 3 years ago in Rocky Mountain National Park and it was amazing! We hiked everywhere and cooked on the fire. We've been talking about camping again this summer, after I finish school. Big Bend is only a couple hours away and we haven't been there yet, so it's possible come August I'll get to break out the camping gear again. I would love just a few days to wander and get lost, to find beauty in the simplicity, and stare at the sky.

Home Again.

Patrick and I got back yesterday from Indiana. I had an amazing trip, and I am so thankful to be able to go home and see me family a couple times a year. My mom and I had a blast digging through thrift stores and crocheting & knitting on the couch. Here is just a short list of the fun.

1. Ate at Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis. I had a Ruben the size of my head!
2. Stopped in Broadripple to a cute little yarn shop where I bought some super fancy yarn.
3. Said Hello to an old friend and got to play with a new baby.
4. Had an amazing Italian meal with my mom and Brother.
5. Watched the Tourist and cuddled with America's cutest dog.
6. Hit up some thrift stores, where I picked up a fun short-brimmed hat.
7. Met my brother for Thai food and drank yummy Thai tea!
8. Switched the GPS to speak in Swedish so my mom's friend from Sweden had to guide us home (Hilarious!)
9. Ate amazing organic wood-fired pizza...seriously good!
10. Attended the centennial running of the Indianapolis 500 with my whole family and a bunch of friends!

Our first list included some great Young Adult Literature for your summer reading list, and today I thought I'd add a few in case you were headed to the library this afternoon. These are a few of the books I have read in the past 6 months.

I Capture the Castle

Young Cassandra lives in a collapsing castle in the English countryside with her family cut off from the world. One day, a rich American, Simon, arrives explaining that he has inherited the estate next door and the castle. Cassandra's older sister, Rose, decides to woo Simon into marrying her and save her family from destitution. This is a whimsical story of a young girl's first encounter with love and the ways of the world told through her journals. This story is full of brilliant and enigmatic characters. And for those of you who watch your movies, Netflix has a film adaptation of this one streaming. Both the book and the film are worth your time.

You Must Remember This

Enid Maria lives in upstate New York with her family who own a print shop. This novel is set in the 1950s when many things go unsaid. Including Enid's love affair with her young uncle, Felix. She pursues him and he continually resists her advances. But the line gets crossed. Enid's family struggles with allegations of being communist sympathizers and how an unjustified accusation can tarnish a family's name. This book may not be for everyone, but it is a haunting story love and intimidation during a time of fear.

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Tracy Chevalier takes a painting of a young girl and stitches an elaborate story full of beautiful imagery. Griet is a young girl who begins working in the Vermeer household. She quickly becomes Johannes Vermeer's assistant, fetching pigments and mixing colors, and eventually sits for him as a model. Vermeer's wife becomes increasingly jealous of the relationship her husband and Griet have formed. This beautiful tale is a peek into 16th century Dutch life and class system and the boundaries that when crossed have dire consequences. Also a wonderful film with Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson.

3 Things Thursday

I've decided to use Thursday to state things that are on my mind. Happy or sad, thankful or regretful.

1. Frustration: Why is it impossible to get in contact with anyone from Yahoo Customer Service? I was forced to change my password, promptly forgot my password, and can't seem to remember the exact wording I used for my top secret security question. All I want to do is read my email. Help!

2. Excitement: In 5 days, I will be on a plane back home to Indiana. I haven't seen my family since December and I miss them terribly. My mom and I will go thrifting for goodies, whip up some crafts, and eat at my favorite restaurants. And I get to go to the Indianapolis 500 for the um-teenth time, I super excited!

3. Exhaustion: I have been told I over commit and this week it has caught up with me. I'm exhausted and trying to finish laundry and cleaning before I leave. I also have to figure out what to do with my cat now that my reliable kitty sitter has moved away. Geesh!

How's about you? I know we have more than 3 emotions swimming inside our heads, but give me a few, let me know I am not alone...

Roller Derby Bake Sale

This weekend was a whirlwind. Friday started with wedding set up and rehearsals. Saturday was the wedding fun all day and well into the morning hours (pictures to follow), but Sunday was Roller Derby Bake Sale Day!

This was the face that kept customers coming bake for treats! And I ran into one of my students this semester, Sarah. She was making a trip to Walmart with her mom. I think I might have freaked her mom out, but it was so much fun.

Altogether, we made some great money and also got the word out about San Angelo Roller Derby. We all had so much fun, but we always have fun together. Yeah, SASS!

Summer is just around the corner...yeah! For some of us, this means we have a little extra time to devote to leisure activities. For the rest of us, our work will just double. I'm not quite sure how my summer will turn out, but there is one thing I can guarantee, I will be reading.

Plus, our library just got the most marvelous make-over! Pictures coming soon...

Books, I thought I would recommend a few and you could recommend a few, and then we would all have a wonderful list of books to pull from this summer. So today I'm starting with some YA Lit!

Young Adult Literature

It's a short read, about a girl, Daisy, who has been sent from New York to live with her distant relatives in England. Meanwhile, a war is brewing, and when her aunt leaves for a business trip, the kids are left alone while the Occupation occurs. I don't want to give away any details; no spoilers here. The story is told in first person from Daisy point of view, the punctuation is atrocious, and the love affair is a little untoward, but all in all it was a good read.

Tally is ugly, but in a few short months she will turn 16, have her operation, become pretty, and move to New Pretty Town. At least, that was the plan before she met Shay. Shay is a super trickster who doesn't want to turn pretty and teaches Tally tricks and secret ways to sneak around. Shay tries to convince Tally to run away to the Smoke, a place kids escape to so they don't have to have the operation, but Tally wants to be pretty. Shay disappears, but leaves Tally a coded note. On the day of Tally's operation, she is taken to meet Dr. Cable, head of Special Circumstances, a group of cruel-looking pretties who secure the city. They tell her that she will not be allowed to become pretty unless she follows after Shay and lets the Specials track her to the Smoke. And that is all I'm telling you. This is the first book in a series Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. I read the first installment in a couple of days and have started Pretties, but it has not caught my interest as much. But to give it credit, I have been absorbed in Macbeth for school. I will finish Pretties and submit my findings.

Warning, I cried several times reading this book, but it was amazing. Mia is a seventeen-year-old girl who plays the cello. She and her family decided on a snowy day to go visit some friends, but on the way there they get in an accident. In a coma, Mia has an out-of-body experience and watches her family and friends as they attempt to deal with the situation. She realizes that her fate is completely in her control; does she stay or does she go?

The story is in first person from Mia's perspective including flashbacks of wonderful moments with her family, friends, and boyfriend. Also included are those teen angsty scene of whether or not Mia fits in.

I know what your saying, "Brooke, this sounds an awful lot like Lovely Bones." Well, this story focuses on the joy we should take out of life and less on how death can alter other people's lives. Hopefully, that helps.

If you love it, Gayle Foreman wrote a follow up called Where She Went to continue Mia's story.

Books I have already raved about that need to be added because of how awesome they are....

The whole trilogy is amazing; it is a must read.

Lauire Halse Anderson is amazing. This book is beautiful and haunting.

This novel is a collection of interrelated poems, stories, and songs from 20 teens. Each entry explores the struggles of adolescent life.

Alright it's your turn. Recommend some great Young Adult Literature for the summer.

Hey there , folks! Remember me? I used to post on this blog all the fun things I used to do like crocheting and photography and other crafty things. Well, I finally finished my semester of student teaching which was amazing. I had the greatest cooperating teacher and an amazing group of supportive senior English teachers. I felt extremely blessed having been assigned to this wonderful group of people.

But now that it's over and I am just moths away from having a Masters degree (EEEK!), I am back to working my 9-5 job. So, I'm in front of the computer again!

One More Week

I have been watching Glee on Netflix, it's soooo great. I refused to watch it before, not for any reason in particular, but now I love it!

My husband was gone all weekend, so I did laundry and watch Glee.

I am so close to the end of the semester I could almost die!
And after looking I my degree plan, I could be completed with all my course work by August. I could have my Masters by August! It's just amazing!

And just four more weeks and my student teaching will be complete and I can get back to a regular blogging schedule. I feel so out of the loop. Such wonderful things are happening in the blog-o-sphere and I'm missing it!

Everyday, I drive to and from work, on the same road. I live in a relatively small town and there is really only one way to go from my home to the office. This fall, when all the leaves dropped to the ground and the cold air swept in, I noticed, for the first time, a sign on the side of an old abandoned Flea Market. Now, I have passed by this Flea Market hundreds of times thinking what amazing treasures are hidden inside, but until last fall I didn't notice what message was blaring at me twice a day.

I have fallen on a bit of a rough time, well financially. My car has finally given up on me and I am forced to make a giant purchase. With student teaching, I have cut back my hours at work substantially and though I do have student loan money, I use it sparingly because I hate the idea of plunging further into debt. I hadn't planned on buying a car until I got a "real" job, but as life would have it, I have to buy one soon.

Money troubles are my number one stress-er, but I just have to remind myself that things have a way of working themselves out. The plans I have for my self are not always the same plans He has for me. Releasing control is a struggle for me.

My mother-in-law gave me a small little plaque when I graduated college with this verse and I always remind myself of it when life doesn't seem to be going my way.

Quick Movie Review

On a whim last night, Patrick and I went to see Red Riding Hood. The movie was a little lackluster and I was hoping for more. Gary Oldman was a little over the top, the two love interests were underwhelming, but Amanda Seyfried was enjoyable. She has the damsel in distress look without being helpless. The film has some really great moments and the visuals are beautiful. If you are teetering on going to see it in the theaters...save your money and wait for the DVD.

Shawna, my dearest pal, has hinted that I might be returning to SXSW this year with her. We swore up and down that we wouldn't return after last year's debacle. but, I was thinking... is int' better to end on a good note than a sour experience?

So there is a possibility of high gas prices and zero sleep...I'll keep you posted!

Even when my cooperating teacher and university supervisor tell me I'm doing a great job managing the class, I feel like I'm hanging on by a thread. As an inexperienced teacher, I feel like I am throwing knowledge like confetti and a small minority of students find its value and keep it, while other students let it fall to the floor and step on it when they exit the classroom.

I'm glad the people determining my grade think I'm doing well, but shouldn't I be more concerned that not all of my students are learning?

Learning, at the high school level, is a choice. I can't force them to take what I am giving them. I just have to disguise it enough where they find some real world application or personal significance and decide it's worth their time.

Okay, I'm done being jaded.

On a happier note, I've been attending roller derby practice and I am loving it! Of course, I haven't taken a hit yet, I feel my cheery outlook my change once I have opponent-inflicted bruises. I'm still nameless, but I guess when I hear/see the right name I'll just know. Thanks for all the suggestions and keep 'em coming!

Weekly Update!

This week I got hammered! No, not like that, I mean emotionally.

This was my first full week of teaching all 6 classes. The ability to keep students hovering on the edge of well behaved little devils is emotionally exhausting! I have students who are amazing and I have student who make me want to pull my hair out, but I need to not let bad ones ruin learning for everyone. Right?

We read short stories, discussed settings and characters, and I even threw in a little art class for fun. Then wrapped up the week with vocabulary bingo. But by Friday, I was fried. This week I have 2 days of gerunds and infinitives and 2 days of literature circles wrapping up with a vocab test. Yeesh! This teaching stuff is tiring. I have the utmost respect for all my teachers. I just hope I'm cut out for this, it's kinda late to turn back now.

I attended roller derby practice, but I don't have all my gear yet to be able to participate and those of us missing our gear skated around the rink getting comfortable on wheels. I was a little shaky at first but have now gained a little confidence. My skates came in on Friday, but I have a feeling these are just my beginner skates. They are kinda cheap but until I know I'm cut out for this, they will have to do.

I'm still without a name, so any ideas would be helpful. Something literary maybe, with a hint of intimidation.

The rodeo is in town here, so I will soon have pictures of fried food on a stick and farm animals! Yeah!

This being the day of love and all that, I thought I would take so time to pay tribute to some of the greatest couples of all time. This is not an extensive list, but merely a top 5 kinda list.

1. Elizabeth and Darcy

Elizabeth and Darcy's love transcends time. For hundreds of years, daydreaming ladies have read of their love affair and lets face it, it's awesome! Whether you're into the Colin Firth version or the latest Matthew MacFadyen adaptation, Mr. Darcy is the strong, silent type and Elizabeth's perfect match.

2. Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelley from

I love this movie. I can watch it again and again. For one thing, Kathleen Kelley owns a bookshop in the West End, it's so adorable. The best part about this movie is when Tom Hanks (Joe Fox) knows that his online flirtation has been with this woman who hates him, but he pursues her anyway and begins to change her mind about him. And I love all the conversations that the two have about Ryan's online fella, when Tom Hanks knows full well he's making fun of himself. Plus, the ending always makes me cry, but I'm a bit of a cryer, thanks to my mother.

3. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

Yeah, I know she married her first cousin and that's kinda gross. But, even though she was queen, their relationship was a partnership. She took his advice on matters of the state and diplomacy. They had 9 children together which later resulted in 42 grandchildren and when Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria stayed in mourning until her death 40 years later.

4. Odysseus and Penelope

He's lost at sea after fighting the 9 year Trojan War and she is sitting at her loom waiting for her husband to return. In the dark of night, Penelope pulls out the loom work she completes during the day to keep her suitors at bay. Odysseus' one goal is to get back to his wife and Penelope knows that one day her husband will return.

5. Ray and Beth Gillies

Yep, my mom and dad. They have been married 36 years and love each other to death! Plus, it's always nice to have a real live couple to try and live up to because left face it know of us will be Elizabeth and Darcy. They met in high school and their first date was a Beach Boys concert. They married in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved to Hawaii where Ray was stationed with the Navy. They moved back to Indiana to start their fabulous family. Rough times come and go but their love is always abundant.

I've had a couple eventful things happen since my last post.

After finishing my first full day teaching, my university supervisor came to one of my classes to observe. She came on the day when I was reading aloud a short story to my students and we were working on identifying elements of the plot to determine the climax of the story. While reading, I had to stop a student from drawing X-rated pictures of his desk, ask a girl to stop plucking her eyebrows in class, and continually keep my sleep students awake. But, after finishing the story, my students engaged in a lively discussion and were able to remember new terms from the previous day. My supervisor was impressed with my presence and my ability to get students back on task. She will be back to observe me tomorrow, so I will need to tweek my lesson plan and iron out some details this afternoon.

I also attended my first roller derby practice! Because I did not have all my gear, I was unable to participate in practice, but I met some amazing ladies and I am totally stoked to get out on the flat track. My skates have been ordered and I sit waiting patiently for their arrival. I recently found out that my original derby name (Nancy Drewblood) has already been registered so I have to think of a new one. Please send any suggestions my way, being a future English teacher, I'm trying to keep my name on the literary/bookish side.

Yesterday, I volunteered at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Family Day. I had a blast! I wish I would have remembered to take some pics. The museum is promoting cultural diversity and the country the guest were transported to this weekend was China. There were arts and crafts, Tai-Chi demonstrations, and made from scratch Chinese food. I was in the kitchen with the food (Patrick complained I smelled like Chinese food the rest of the day). The most adorable little Chinese woman, Rose, who owns and operates the best Chinese restaurant in town, taught me how to make crab rangoon from start to finish. I learned how to use a wok and fry up dumplings. It was so fun!

Then yesterday afternoon, I shot engagement portraits for my dear friend Jamie. She's getting married in May and I'm her maid-of-honor. Since I will be unable to shoot the wedding, I wanted to shoot her engagement portraits. We had so much fun and the sunny weather held out for us. Thank goodness!

I'm off to work on lesson plans and homework and probably run by Target at some point. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

My first full day

I taught my first full day today. All 6 periods, all me.

There is nothing more tiring than having to explain to second semester seniors why they need to learn literary elements of short stories yet again. It came to a point where I really wanted to say, because you haven't seemed to learn it from the 10 other teachers who attempted to teach you this material.

But for my own good, I reply with a loving and super education graduate student answer...

"Improving the skills of deducing information from literary texts is one of the best ways to sharpen your critical thinking skills and push you to a higher level of learning. You may not plan to continue reading short stories once you leave school, but the critical thinking skills you gain will last you a lifetime."

My professors would be so proud.

The kids just looked at me like I was crazy, which I must be to pursue a teaching profession.

1. If I could only read one magazine publication for the rest of eternity, I would choose Nylon .

2. If I were to run my own magazine it would be about fashion, music, and DIY. And maybe a bit of literary fun...reader submitted writings- short stories, poetry, personal narratives and such.

3. I buy my magazines standing in line at the super market.

4. I prefer my magazines in print. I like to keep them and read them over and over.

5. The number of magazines I buy each month is dwindling since I started student teaching. Sadly, I have little time to read the fun stuff. But I did pick up People Style Watch at the grocery store last night. I love seeing celebs in their regular everyday clothing.

6. My favorite magazine genre is fashion.

7. The magazines I read regularly are Nylon, Somerset Studio (including the art journal quarterly), Runner's World, People Style Watch (not regular People), Bon Appettit, PDN, The English Journal, and Lucky .

Snow Day!

Like much of the nation, we were hit by a winter storm that covered us in snow/ice/hail/stuff. Since they cancelled school, I spent the day cozy in my home, writing lesson plans, cleaning, and doing some laundry.

It reminded me of days when I was in school. Back home in Indiana, we had an abundance of snow days. We spent them sledding and ice skating, enjoying the hours of a school free day. All the neighborhood kids would come out wearing their winter gear armed with sleds and skates. Then, coming home sopping wet and making hot cocoa.

Now it's Netflix and coffee, taskstream and lit books.

I feel like I have been neglecting my blog since I started students teaching. But, I have noticed that teaching for 8 hours, working a part-time job for 4 hours and going home to eat and sleep leave little time for anything else.

I'm so happy that I decided to go back to school. I love being in the classroom and working with kids. It's challenging to say the least, but there is a growing sense of fulfillment that I do not have working at the TV station.

While we are on the topic of the TV station, I did a commercial for a new product we are launching and the commercial began running today. I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy to post here. I was also asked to do another commercial by some business owners so I guess I found a small talent talking in front of the camera.

This Saturday, I will take my PPR, the very last test I need to become fully certified, so wish me luck! I hope everyone's week is going swimmingly and everyone's families are happy and healthy.

My friend talked me into taking an adult ballet class at our local studio. It's a mix of ballet and modern with a sprinkling of pilates and yoga. I was once a dancer and loved ballet, but have lost all the grace I once had.

After the first class, I could definitely tells which muscles I no longer use and will now have to strengthen again for class. I'm not planning on dancing in front of anyone but my classmates and our instructor, but I do feel just a little silly. Maybe because the room next to my class is full of graceful nine years olds.

But I bought my first pair of ballet slippers since I was fifteen, and praise the heavens I don't have to wear the leotard and tights!

But signing up for ballet made me think of all the things I think I'm too old for now and have decided that's crap! I'm not too old for anything! The youthful spirit needs to be ignited in me and I am committed to doing so.

I'm not too old too take ballet classes.
I'm not to old too sign up for roller derby (Sorry, Mom.).
I'm not too old too watch teen dramas and MTV.
And I'm definitely not too old to go swing at the park.

Talk about a super flattering picture of yours truly! But it was the only pic I had illustrating my staple summer outfit.

1. Winter is for hats and gloves and scarves.

2. Summer is for camping, swimming, and exploring. Oh, and getting out of the West Texas heat!

3. If it were summer instead of winter right now I'd be reading a book under a tree.

4. My favorite thing to do in winter is to curl up on the couch and watch classic movies drink hot tea, eating leftover Christmas chocolate, and crochet.

5. My favorite thing to do in summer is to spend time outside.

6. The ideal outfit for a sunny summer day is skirt, tee, and sandals topped off with the sunglasses. (See above)

Because of my concurrent sicknesses (thank you for all your warm wishes of recovery!), I have been delayed on posting a holiday recap. I don't want to bore you with the mundane, so I just what to hit on a couple of high points and the first my brother's graduation.

Yep, there he is, waving at his screaming family. My brother is now a proud graduate of Purdue University. As far as graduations go, his was a speedy version. Just names on the screen and live video of each candidate receiving their diplomas and shaking hands with the faculty.
So as soon as he came up on the jumbo-tron, the whole family started screaming and cheering and he looked up at the camera and gave a wave.

Well, since the last time I posted that I would do a Christmas recap with some pics, I got a horrible case a food poisoning. I haven't been that sick in years. It was awful. It took a few days to recover, but then I was hit with a head cold and there so much gunk in my head I am dizzy all the time. I couldn't read or watch TV, all I did was sleep. I slept through New Years and I am slowly working towards recovery. Cross your fingers! I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe News Years celebration.

I really excited about 2011. Some big changes are hopefully in the air.

1. I start student teaching a week from tomorrow and I was assigned Senior level English.

2. Graduate with my Master's degree.

3. Hopefully, obtain a teaching job.

Of course, when I get a teaching job, there will be packing and moving and home finding to be done. But for now, I 'm just going to focus on these three things.

Anybody else have big 2011 plans? A big change your excited about? Maybe a resolution?

Saturday, A friend from work invited a couple of us over to make lasagna and crochet. She was in charge of the kitchen and I was charge for crochet instructions. I'm kicking myself for forgetting to take my camera, because it was hilarious!

We start the afternoon by preparing the lasagna. Carrie, my friend from work, decided to quadruple the recipe so we could enjoy lasagna that day and also to take one home to freeze. She pre-chopped most of the veggies, so we just cooked, and browned and assembled. But, it took about 3 hours. The kitchen was all a frenzy with four women trying to do their part to create this meal.

After the lasagna was in the oven, we sat on the couch to crochet...the days lesson, double crochet. I started teaching Carrie to crochet back in October. She knows her pace and announced to be that after months of single crochet, she was ready for a new stitch. I first taught our other to friends how to chain and start creating rows for a scarf, they both picked it up really fast. So when I sat down to teach Carrie the double crochet, they joined in as well. It was such fun!

Saturday, I also attended a Christmas party. Again, I forgot my camera...and I wanted to take a picture of my get-up it was so cute. I wore an ivory trapeze dress from H&M and a black blazer with black tights and cranberry platform heels. I really liked it and will definitely wear this combination again. The party was full of great conversation, pomegranate-cranberry cosmos, and pretty little Christmas rum cakes.

The next morning we attended the Christmas Cantata at a friend's church. It was beautiful! There was a full orchestra and I was completely enamored with the harp musician. And one of the professors at our university sang a solo and his voice was very warm, it was wonderful.

Sunday evening Patrick and I met up with our friend Toro. He is planning a trip back to Cambodia, his homeland and invited us to come visit him while he's there. Toro is such a generous and giving soul. It would be an amazing experience and I hope it all works out.

Even though I forgot my camera, I had a wonderful weekend. And now I have laundry and packing. I head to Indiana on Wednesday to see my little brother graduate college. I so excited to see my family again, and the extended family I haven't seen since last Christmas. And it's been snowing so I hope I get to see some when I get there...pictures in the snow! I won't forget my camera!

My poor cat

Here he is, my beast in all his glory, Rilo (yes, he was named after Rilo Kiley). He has been the kink in my week, but it was completely not his fault.

Patrick and I came back Lubbock and Rilo seemed fine, but on Tuesday he was having issues. I googled his symptoms and low and behold, urinary infection. After a call to the vet, he fit us in for an appointment later that morning.

After the preliminary check-up...my cat is 22lbs. Eek, he's now on diabetic diet food! I learned a fun fact, Our towns crappy water that humans don't drink is also unsuitable for animal consumption. I used to give the cat filtered water , but Patrick gave me crap about it so I stopped, and now Rilo is back on the filtered water.Well, the vet gives me antibiotics and tells me if anything changes or if I find blood in his urine to bring him in. I take him home and lock him in the bathroom since he is enjoying tinkling in random spots in the house and head back to work.

I return home to discover blood in my poor kitty's urine and I call the vet. That night I kept waking up to check on him, and I slept very little. I take him back in the morning and leave him with the vet for a feline cleanse of some sort. When I pick him up, he is mad, really mad. But I get him home and he's eating his low-cal dinner and he curls up on the couch with me and sleeps for 5 hours. Yeah, my lazy cat is back to normal and I got a full night's sleep.

The Annual Schwantz Christmas Party!

I'm blessed with absolutely wonderful in-laws! Patrick's parents throw a Christmas party every year that is just so much fun. Usually there is some kind of theme; last year was beer and everyone brought a pint glass for the exchange, this year was wine and everyone brought a wine stopper.

And his parents (with the help of a few friends) cook dinner for fifty or so people. This year was Italian, Pasta with three different homemade sauces, Caesar salad from scratch and bruschetta. It was delicious!

Here's a few pictures before the crowds arrive. I got so caught up in the party these are the only pictures I took. But I guess, it's better than none.

Some of you may already know, I am an Audrey Hepburn fanatic. There are lots of us out there. When I was younger, my grandma told me I was going to grow up and be like Audrey Hepburn. So I thought, she meant I was going to be a famous movie star. But my grandma meant, I was going to be skinny and she was right, but I didn't find out until later...I thought she had extremely high hopes for me.

The first time I saw Breakfast at Tiffany's, I was 13 and staying with my grandparents for two weeks. The only channel that my grandmother ever watched was Turner Classic Movies. If it was black and white, she was watching it. I remember thinking how cool Holly Golightly was, but I didn't really understand that she was a call girl. And I loved that her couch was a bathtub cut in half and her cat was named Cat.

So my obsession began and the collecting of movies followed.

One of you is going to be super lucky. I purchased these super sweet boots from ebay and sadly when they arrived, they are a smidge small in my right foot. To Louise's dismay, my feet are two different sizes. They claim to be an 8 1/2 and though I wear 8 1/2, these squeeze my toes a little more than I am willing to suffer for these lil' darlings.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Patrick and I spent the holiday with our friends Kevin and Shea and their daughter Averie. It was nice to be included and welcomed into their family. It's not that I am ungrateful, but it's weird to spend holidays with someone else's family. They have different food, different prayers, and different traditions. So I think Patrick and I felt a little awkward and on the outside.
My family called me and I was jealous that they were all together and I wasn't with them or any family. I haven't spent a Thanksgiving with my family since I got married, but I love Thanksgiving with Patrick's families. I guess I was just a little sad that we didn't see any family.

If I were to awake one morning having magically acquired some sort of musical talent and landed myself a sweet record deal where I was allowed to release an album of covers of my choosing, this play list might resemble my platinum selling album. tee-hee!

Lots of the songs I chose have a story or remind me of people I love, but I realized that it's a bunch of oldies. I think my parents have influenced my cover choices significantly. John Prine for my dad and Loggins and Messina for my Mom. Joni Mitchell and Natalie Merchant for old friends and Johnny Cash for my husband.

And Walking in Memphis, also for my dad. We stopped in Memphis when he drove me from Indiana to Texas to drop me off at college. My dad is a blues fanatic. It was so cool to be in the city with him and hear live music rolling out every doorway on Beale Street. He loves Memphis.

Broadripple's Burning for my brother who introduced me to Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, probably my favorite band. One of my happiest memories is the two of us going to a Margot show.

Infinity Scarf Pattern

While my husband and I were in Austin. I saw this beautiful lil' gem at Urban Outfitters.

Then I start thinking (like many of us do), Hey I can make that! But this time, I actually did!

So here it is my first crochet pattern for the uber simple infinity scarf. I made mine in a little over an hour. It's great if you are just starting out working in rounds or if you want to go ahead and give rounds a try.

Yarn: 1 skein of Lion Bran Woolease Thick & Quick (Shown in Spice)

Hook Size: N
Other Materials: Yarn Needle to weave ends
Stitch Marker

Row 1: Chain 100, join with slip stitch. Try super hard not to twist your chain.
Row 2: Ch1, sc 100.
Row 3-10: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off and weave in you ends.

You'll have just a bit of yarn leftover and a big chunky infinity scarf.

But Brooke, What if I want a super extra chunky infinite scarf?

Weekend update...
Friday Night- Went to the George Lopez Show, decided he was not my cup of tea, but the opening band was amazing!
Saturday- Worked a book drive and wrote a paper.
Sunday- Crocheted 3 infinity scarves, pattern to be posted (as soon as I take some pictures), watched The Walking Dead and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. My husband and I watch all the Harry Potter movies leading up to the release of the new movie. I'm so stoked!

Today's play list is completely chill. I just had an incident at work that made my blood pressure sky rocket and I need to relax, the result is this lovely play list that brought me back to center. It also kinda matches the gray chilly weather outside (I'm loving it!). Get a cup of coffee or tea and prepare to be lulled.

Anniversary Recap

Oops! I should have blogged about my killer Austin Anniversary Weekend earlier but I'm a slacker this week. We got a late start which was fine with us. Patrick shoots Friday night football so he doesn't get home until 2 or 3am Saturday morning and so we took our time heading out of town.

When we got to town, we checked into our hotel and headed down to Guadalupe. We went to Urban Outfitters, where a super nice sales guy helped us with the grand selection of lomo cameras and we decided to get the Mini Diana with the flash. It shoots 35mm and gives you two options...square frame or a diptych rectangle option. It's so freaking cute. I can't wait to get this roll developed and see what I got. By the way, 35mm film has got a bit pricey since I last purchased a roll.

Then we went to Momoko Bubble Tea house for our very first bubble tea experience. They were adamant about no photos, so I will just have to describe it's majesty. Floor to ceiling covered in Sanrio, Manga, and super Japanese goodies. The menu was extensive and I was clueless. Patrick order the Pearl Milk and I got the Dragonfly. It was interesting and delicious, but the sun had set so all you get is this crappy picture taken in the car. I'll have to try it again before I make my decision of whether I like it or not, but I get cross something off my 31 before 31 list. Yeah!

We ate at Mekong River on 6th Street. Spring rolls and vermicelli bowls with jasmine tea. It was super yummy. An added bonus, live blues music across the street and the weather was perfect! Then we walked around 6th Street and decided to go play shuffle board at Buffalo Billiards. I am horrible but it was super fun. Patrick taught some fellas how to play. We ended up switching to pool a little late, which I am still horrible at but I had fun anyway.

Sunday morning we got some film and headed over to South Congress Cafe, my favorite spot for breakfast in Austin. Patrick had Crab Cake Eggs Benedict with chipotle hollandaise sauce. I had the spinach, artichoke, and portobello omelet with green chilie salsa. Yum! And for breakfast desert, a slice of Carrot Cake French Toast. Double Yum!

We wondered around Whole Foods for a while and went to REI, Patrick's favorite. Here, we tested possible camping chairs.

We wondered around Anthropology and I tried on some dresses. Then we spent a good while in Book People book store. We discovered our friend's portraits (Texas Tara) in the 666 Photography book.
All in all it was a wonderful weekend and we made it home in time for The Walking Dead, my new favorite show!

Anniversary Eve

Tomorrow is our anniversary and I think we have decided to spend the weekend in Austin. As many times as I have been to Austin, I have never been to Austin with my husband. He usually goes for assignments and I go hear bands. There are places in Austin he likes to go and places I like to go and finally, we get to go together. Yipee!

I am also excited to be in a city where I can try Bubble Tea. It's on my list of things to do before I turn 31. There are several tea rooms by the UT campus. Yeah, I can finally cross something off that list.

Since we are celebrating our anniversary, I thought I'd share 5 reasons why I love my husband.

1. He is the most genuine kind person.
2. He can talk me down from my hysteria.
3. He's my #1 fan and he calls me out when I'm not doing what I should.
4. He has a direct line to my funny bone.
5. He may be the only person I can be around everyday for the rest of my life.

I am so lucky to have a partner in life. I know I say it all the time, but I am so blessed to have someone who can continue to love me day after day, through all my neurosis. He has backed me in my decision to go grad school and tells me I can when I feel like I can't.

It's only Wednesday and the exhaustion has moved in and staked a claim. I have not been to bed before midnight this week and it is wearing on me. I need my beauty sleep or I turn into a horribly cranky person, and I can feel her coming...Eek!

And, our toilet tank over flowed during the night and we woke up to a giant puddle on our bathroom floor. Time to call the landlord. Not the best way to start a morning.

But let's push all my grumbling to the side, shall we? Let's talk about something fun!

10 Things to be Smiling about in November!

1. My Anniversary

This Saturday, my husband and I are celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary. We haven't made any specific plans yet, but we'll think of something.

2. Fall Weather

I know some of you have been enjoying the crisp chill in the air, but here in West Texas, this week is the first time we have felt fall weather. Yesterday, I wore a jacket! Yeah! It makes me want to bundle up and drink hot chocolate outside in front of a fire. I'm a no marshmallows kinda girl, how about you? Marshmallows or No Marshmallows?

3. My Jo Tote

My new cute camera bag came in and I have placed all the goods safely inside. I'm in love and just in time for holiday travel and the picture taking extravaganza.It was a birthday present from my loving husband. Thanks babe!

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I

Oh yeah, I am a Potter freak! I am so excited. I'm going to buy tickets for the midnight showing today. I am rereading the 7th book for the fourth time. I have a ritual every time a new movie comes out I read the book again. So who will be at the theater on November 18th at midnight, besides me?

5. Daylight Savings
It means an extra hour of sleep on Sunday...it's the little things that make me smile!

6. The November Issue of Bon Appetit
The day this gem arrives in my mailbox, I start dreaming of all the yummy food I will attempt to make. Patrick's parents give us a subscription every year, it's wonderful. You think I'd be a better cook but I'm not. I do make at least one dish from the magazine thought. Green onion wasabi mashed potatoes...yeah, I did that!

7. Thanksgiving

Because of Patrick's schedule, we haven't made any specific plans for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. An entire day revolving around family and food, how fabulous is that? This year Patrick has to work either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Bummer, but we have such wonderful friends here that several spots are being saved for us at a couple of tables around town. If we stay here for Christmas, it will be the first Christmas we have had by ourselves since we got married. Being around our families during the holidays is super important to us, so I hope we get Christmas with one of the three families.

8. Finishing My Novel
I know it seems like a big one, but I have been keeping up with my writing schedule and I am a head of my daily word goal but just a smidge. I'm not saying at the end of November I will have the perfect novel ready for publication, but I will have the meat of a book, a rough draft ready for massive revisions. Thanks to National Novel Writing Month, there are thousands working toward the same goal this month. So here is to all those fingers tapping numerous keyboards around the world.

9. Not Working Black Friday
I worked retail all my employed life until I landed this gig and every year this than I thank the heavens that I am not working retail on Black Friday. If you are working retail on Black Friday, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

10. Decorating for Christmas
Yep. The day after Thanksgiving begins the Christmas season. Lights go up and stockings come out. Oh that reminds me, I want a super cute advent calendar this year, a reusable one. I have nothing against the chocolate filled ones they are delightful. And maybe a new tree, ours looks kinda sad.

Before my weekly play list, I thought I would recap the weekend. Not a whole lot going on, we had an extremely low key Halloween weekend and sadly Patrick was working for most of it. And, I forgot to charge my camera batteries so I have no pictures. Dang.

Mini Weekend Recap

1 Went to a generic rock show. Had it not been free and the lead singer not been my friend's cousin, I would have stayed my pretty butt on the couch crocheting and watching scary movies. They put on a good show, but covered Nickelback (vomit). But here in the void of decent live music, I take what I can get.

2. Had lunch with a friend who moved away and he gave me presents.

3. Went to a Halloween party as Nancy Botwin from Weeds which means I went as myself and carried a latte. Not that I am a pot dealing soccer mom, but I have been told on several occasions I look like her. Patrick dressed as a hitchhiker except he wore a backpack and a sign that said "Portland, OR." Patrick and I left earlier, her had worked a 15 hour day and was exhausted.

4. Patrick's parents drove down from Lubbock to have lunch with us because today is Patrick's Birthday!

5. Watched The Walking Dead on AMC...amazing!

I'm not sure if this play list actually has a theme. Mostly, it's what would be playing in my car if my CD player actually worked...hopefully a new car is in the cards for 2011.

And just in case anyone was wondering...I completed my October goal. I did not thrift for a whole 31 days!

And for my new November goal, writing a novel, it's time I started cranking out some words.

Writing dreams and such

As an aspiring English teacher (I'm so close.), I am in love with the written word. Books, poems, plays, short stories...it doesn't matter. I am profoundly amazed by people who can link words together to paint scenery and evoke emotions. I write in my journal from time to time and occasionally slap a few sentences together in the name of fiction, but nothing I would call writing. Maybe because it's so personal and insignificant to anyone other than me.

November is National Novel Writing Month. Last year, I read an article about a 7th grade teacher in Colleyville, Texas who presented the idea of writing a novel to her students. And they did it and they kept writing, some students exceeded the 50,000 word requirement and just kept on writing. So I thought, if 7th graders can do it, surely, I can do it.

I am going to attempt to write more than just personal scribbles. I'm going to write a novel. Eek!

Luckily, this movement is concerned with quantity and not quality. As long as I submit 50,000 words by midnight Nov. 30th, I can call myself a novelist. This is just the jump-start I need to get some writing into gear and fulfill one of those things on my bucket list. I never said it needed to be published...it just says WRITE A NOVEL.

So for those of you who have secret dreams of writing novels, join me in my quest to complete 50,000 words in 3o days! It's only 1,666 words a day!

Are You Scared?

WARNING SCARY MOVIE PICTURES BELOW!

The best thing about Halloween is all the scary movies they play on TV. I love love love scary movies! At the ripe age of 5, I was introduced by my aunt (who was babysitting me at the time) to horror. We curled up on the couch, turned off all the lights and watch Amittyville Horror. I don't remember much of the movie, but I do remember that when my parents came home and discovered my aunt let me watch a scary movie, my mother was steamed. Maybe it's because I know my mother didn't want me watching such movies or because I'm kinda twisted, but I was addicted to horror movies.

Now, I have to make a distinction between horror and gore. Blood and guts doesn't bother me if it has a purpose, but some of the newer movies that are just montages of the thirteen most disturbing ways to kill people are not for me (Hostel and every Saw after the first one). Killing for the sake of grossing out the audience, no thank you. Killing for the sake of driving the story and scaring the pants off of me, yes please!

My favorite slasher series is Halloween. Michael Myers is freaking scary, even if he is just a white spray painted Captain Kirk. The creepiest thing...he never runs. He is almost impossible to kill (apparently beheading works) and he comes back again and again. If you haven't seen a Halloween movie, you should. We have been exposed to far scary things so these flicks shouldn't freak you out. But, I recommend starting at the beginning with the originals (you can skip the 3rd movie, it has absolutely nothing to do with Micheal Myers, weird). What about the Rob Zombie remake, you say? Eh. I saw the first one and wasn't my cup of tea...I think it's a little too dark for my taste.

My favorite horror genre is Zombies! I love zombies! And I love George Romero for giving us zombies! The original Night of the Living Dead in black and white still freaks me out..."They're coming for you, Barbara." Eeek! I love all the spin offs, Shawn of the Dead and Zombieland were excellent! Need a horribly funny/bloody/foreign Nazi zombie flick...Dead Snow. It's German and completely ridiculous!

"So Brooke, where do you stand on the issue of zombies running?"

Well, I'm glad you asked. I am neither for nor against running zombies. In 28 Days Later, the infected run. Though they look like zombies, but they are not zombies. In the remake of Dawn of the Dead, the zombies run, fast. I saw this movie in the theater 3 times. Once with my brother, then with my boyfriend (now husband), and then with my mom. I thought it was great! Before they started running, they could over power you because of sheer numbers. Sure you could run away from a couple of fumbling zombies, but as soon as you drop your keys, BAM, 15 or so are gnawing on you innards. Slow zombies mean you can't make mistakes, which we all do because we are human. Fast zombies mean run for your life. Either way, it's cinematic fun!

So, Brooke what do you recommend watching for a good scare this Halloween?

Hello to a new week!

Well, I got most of my to-do list done this weekend. It rained all morning on Saturday which translates into me having to overcome the urge to snuggle on the couch with a quilt and a cup of coffee. I read all my homework, crocheted, did laundry, and hang out with some friends on Friday. I turned up just in time to see the Texas Rangers victory over the NY Yankees. We are going to the World Series! Yeah!

On another note...
It seems ages since I have have posted a play list for Mixtape Monday, so I whipped one up with a few gold oldies from my past. In college when I was having a bad day, I would put on "Happiness is All the Rage" by Promise Ring and dance around my room. It always made me feel a little better, it kinda reminds me of Grey's Anatomy when they "dance it out."

It's Thursday. You know it, I know it , the world knows it. But what I don't know is what happened to the rest of the week. I started off with grand plans but my frenemy, Procrastination, settled in. Ick.

So I was thinking since motivation is leaving me high and dry that I would post today's to do list and cross items off as I complete them through out the day. If you need help getting things done today, do the same and we can be cheerleaders for completing our tasks and I always get more accomplished when someone is holding me accountable.

I made myself a silent promise this month...

I WILL NOT THRIFT.

Don't laugh but I sometimes have a little voice inside my head that says, "Today you will find something amazing at Goodwill." or something along those lines. I'm the type that probably goes to a thrift store about twice a week. Luckily, I live in a small town and can usually hit one up on my lunch break. But in an effort to purge my house of unused items I told myself, You will not thrift during the month of October. So far, so good. We are more than half way through the month and I have not taken the lunch detour to my local thrift store. But, it's getting hard, especially when I sit down with my morning cup of coffee and read my favorite blogs and see all the goodies other people are picking up. I just need to smile and comment..."What great finds", and quickly move on to my next read hoping for a tutorial or play list.

Just 12 more days...I can do it!

In the mean time I can just daydream about the goods I usually search for...
